The interchange at US 41 is a major truck stop along I-75 north of Gainesville. The I-75 bridge does not have the required minimum bridge clearance and has been hit by oversized trucks several times during its life, including most recently in 2021. The interchange has also had multiple fatalities in recent years. After the most recent bridge impact, the Florida Department of Transportation tasked the Osiris 9 team to develop multiple alternatives to address safety, access management, and bridge vertical clearance issues. The concepts were constrained within existing right-of-way to support acceleration to design in response to a bridge impact.
The preferred alternative developed by the Osiris 9 team featured teardrop turbo roundabouts at the interstate ramps and a third roundabout to facilitate large truck U-turns. Additional considerations included lowering US 41 to increase vertical clearance below I-75, providing comprehensive pedestrian connectivity with RRFB crossings, and evaluating drainage treatment and permitting options.
